Cleaning and maintaining kitchenware correctly has become something of a lost art in modern times. Soiled dishes? They can be put in the dishwasher. Dull knives? Use an electric sharpener to put them through. Cutlery that is warped? Throw it away and get a new one. While it could be acceptable to throw away a cutting board from the 99-cent store due to carelessness, the chef should be made to take a walk of shame just for the idea of doing so with a lovely, hardwood cutting board.
Three Ways to Take Care of Your Wooden Cutting Board
- Clean with Water
Some people prefer to clean their boards using dish soap and water. But this is not recommended because it can lead to the board becoming covered in suds.
The best way to clean a board is to use hot water and a sponge to scrub off any foods and fluids that have come into touch with the board.
- Disinfect with Vinegar
There are two ways to disinfect a board. One way is to use white vinegar and the other is to use a mixture of two tablespoons of chlorine bleach in a gallon of water.
White vinegar: White vinegar is a natural and eco-friendly disinfectant that can be used on any surface, including boards. It’s also cheaper than bleach.
Bleach: Chlorine bleach can be used for more serious disinfecting needs because it kills bacteria and viruses better than white vinegar does. However, it is more expensive and not eco-friendly.
Because vinegar has a low pH and bleach has a high pH—both of which will destroy bacteria and germs because they can only exist in specific pH ranges—these liquids effectively clean the board. To use, dunk a cloth in the solution, then use the wet towel to scrub the board clean.
- Dry with Cloth
The most important part of this process is to be sure that you don't leave any streaks or residue behind because these can contaminate the board again. The final step is the most crucial for maintaining your cutting board since the warping of your board is caused by water into the wood and causing the fibers to swell.
